readingReading is a cognitive process of giving meaning to the texts and symbols perceived by the sense of sight. It is very essential in today’s generation in order for the citizens to exchange information and share information to other people in the society. If a person has the ability to read, then it will open numerous doors of opportunities for him or her. It will give a person the chance to expand his or her knowledge about pretty much everything in this world. Learning without the ability of reading would probably be impossible because reading is a critical element in the process of learning. In addition, if ever a person, for instance, does not have the ability to read, learning for him or her would really be limited. The beauty of the ability to read is that it brings about potential that is unlimited, that is, it promises to provide knowledge without borders or constraints. Hence, it gives an individual a weapon of possible limitless learning and understanding about different aspects in the society.

The skill of reading is actually not that hard to acquire. Young children at the age of about 5 to 6 years old already even knew how to read, at least the most basic of words. Of course, this is acquired together with proper education. This also goes to show the importance of education in the society for without education, all of us would probably be less productive individuals. However, let us be reminded that reading and understanding what one was reading are two different entities. Reading is much easier but understanding what was read is pretty much the hard part because not all materials read are easily comprehended and understood. Some reading materials require a greater amount of skill and knowledge for an individual to be able to understand what was read. Some people do not have the ability to understand what the material is truly talking about or the meaning that the material is trying to convey to the reader may be because of the complexity of the language used in the material or perhaps the type of sentence construction used such as analogies. Understanding is much more difficult because it demands critical analysis from the readers. The degree of complexity among reading materials varies and so are the abilities or skills of the persons reading them. For educated readers, it is assumed that their skills in terms of reading are much higher than those who do not have formal education or persons that are considered to be uneducated. There is a strong relationship between the level of educational attainment and skills in reading of an individual. Therefore, the higher the educational attainment of a person, the higher the skill he has on reading. This is, in fact, very reasonable and logical since how can an individual learn the skill of reading if he or she has not undergone formal education about it. It only makes a lot of sense that the more educated you are, the higher your skills in reading will be.

Furthermore, reading has also various types in terms of purpose and materials being used. One of which is what we call Proofreading. Proofreading is a type of reading wherein an individual or the reader reads the material for the objective of finding typographical errors in it. The rate of doing this varies from experience and skill. Having to do this as a profession, it will definitely help in making proofreading faster than ordinary people. The more you are accustomed of doing it, the faster the rate of finishing the task. Another type of reading is cramming. It is usually done minutes before an exam would actually start. It is mostly done by students who did not have the opportunity to study their lessons for the test. Actually there are a lot more types of reading. The point in here is that reading is done for many purposes. That is why the importance of having to master the skill of reading is greatly emphasized in this article. The more you read, the more knowledge you acquire. The more knowledge you acquire, the more intelligent you become. And lastly, the more intelligent you are, the higher the chances for you to land on a very good job position in a company.
